What to expect at an Iyengar yoga class

What is an Iyengar yoga class like?

Classes usually begin with a few moments of quiet followed by some warm up poses and stretches.  The poses (asanas) taught during the class will vary from week to week depending on the focus of the class, for example standing poses, forward bends or twists. Classes may be energetic or more recuperative. Beginners classes often include standing poses as these form the foundation for the other poses and help to teach the correct alignment which is central to the Iyengar method.  To help with understanding alignment, poses may be done using props such as blocks, chairs or the walls of the room.  The class will end with time for quiet and relaxation which may include some breathing practice (pranayama).

What should I wear?

You should wear comfortable clothes that don’t restrict your movement, for example t-shirt and leggings or shorts.  Yoga is practised in bare feet.

What should I bring?

Your teacher will be able to lend you equipment initially but if you have a yoga mat and any other equipment such as blocks and belts, please bring them.   It is useful to bring a small blanket which can be used for support in poses and also for warmth during relaxation.

Anything else I need to know?

Don’t eat before class, it is best to leave at least  2 hours after eating a light meal or snack  or 3-4 hours after a main meal.

It is important that you tell your teacher before the class  if you have any injuries or medical conditions  or if you are pregnant.  This will allow your teacher to help with modifications to ensure your yoga practice is safe and beneficial.
